Gerry Dulac's NFL Forecast: Week 1
Friday, September 07, 2007
The first full slate of NFL games kicks off on Sunday, and the PG's Gerry Dulac offers his prognostications of how week one will transpire ...
GAME: Pittsburgh Steelers (8-8 in '06) at Cleveland Browns (4-12) 1 p.m., Cleveland Stadium

THE SKINNY: The Steelers have won seven in a row vs. the Browns and have allowed them just one offensive TD in the past 12 quarters. Not even Jamal Lewis will be able to change that.

PREDICTION: Steelers, 23-13

GAME: Denver Broncos (9-7) at Buffalo Bills (7-9) 1 p.m., Ralph Wilson Stadium

THE SKINNY: The Bills are a young team trying to rise, especially after winning five of their final nine last season. The Broncos are trying to determine what they are.

PREDICTION: Bills, 24-21

GAME: Philadelphia Eagles (10-6) at Green Bay Packers (8-8) 1 p.m., Lambeau Field

THE SKINNY: The Packers won their final four last season, giving them hope it could be a sign of things to come. The Eagles will quickly squash that optimism.

PREDICTION: Eagles, 24-17

GAME: Kansas City Chiefs (9-7) at Houston Texans (6-10) 1 p.m., Reliant Stadium

THE SKINNY: Don't forget, the Chiefs made the playoffs last season, even with an unsettled situation at quarterback. But the Texans can be sneaky, especially early in the season.

PREDICTION: Chiefs, 17-13

GAME: Tennessee Titans (8-8) at Jacksonville Jaguars (8-8) 1 p.m., Alltel Stadium

THE SKINNY: An early division game to see who will finish second to the Colts in the AFC South. Right now, the Titans get the edge with Vince Young.

PREDICTION: Titans, 28-24

GAME: Atlanta Falcons (7-9) at Minnesota Vikings (6-10) 1 p.m., Metrodome

THE SKINNY: The Falcons led the NFL in rushing last season, but that was because of Michael Vick. Meet the new dynamic duo -- Chester Taylor and rookie Adrian Peterson.

PREDICTION: Vikings, 27-20

GAME: New England Patriots (12-4) at New York Jets (10-6) 1 p.m., Giants Stadium

THE SKINNY: The Jets are the only AFC East team that might provide problems for the defending division champ. But even they are no match for the new and improved Patriots.

PREDICTION: Patriots, 27-16

GAME: Carolina Panthers (8-8) at St. Louis Rams (8-8) 1 p.m., Edward Jones Dome

THE SKINNY: Panthers QB Jake Delhomme has never lost to St. Louis (3-0). But the Rams are 10-2 in their past 12 home openers and will throw with success vs. Panthers secondary.

PREDICTION: Rams, 27-20

GAME: Miami Dolphins (6-10) at Washington Redskins (5-11) 1 p.m., FedEx Field

THE SKINNY: The Dolphins have a new coach, a new quarterback and a new outside linebacker. The Redskins have the same old cast that won only five games last season.

PREDICTION: Dolphins, 17-14

GAME: Detroit Lions (3-13) at Oakland Raiders (2-14) 4:15 p.m., McAfee Coliseum

THE SKINNY: The Raiders haven't won a regular-season game since they beat the Steelers last October. They also have the NFL's most pathetic offense.

PREDICTION: Lions, 34-20

GAME: Chicago Bears (13-3) at San Diego Chargers (14-2) 4:15 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium

THE SKINNY: The Chargers finished the regular season with 10 consecutive victories and the league's best record. Nothing has changed -- except the head coach.

PREDICTION: Chargers, 20-13

GAME: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-12) at Seattle Seahawks (9-7) 4:15 p.m., Qwest Field

THE SKINNY: Jon Gruden will use his 11th different starting quarterback since becoming coach in Tampa Bay. The sacrificial lamb this time is Jeff Garcia, a playoff QB in '06.

PREDICTION: Seahawks, 24-13

GAME: New York Giants (8-8) at Dallas Cowboys (9-7) 8:15 p.m., Texas Stadium

THE SKINNY: Finally, a game between the Giants and Cowboys that doesn't include Bill Parcells. His replacement, Wade Phillips, has to beat the Giants.

PREDICTION: Cowboys, 28-24

GAME: Baltimore Ravens (12-4) at Cincinnati Bengals (8-8) 8 p.m., Paul Brown Stadium

THE SKINNY: Marvin Lewis has been able to beat the Ravens more times than not (5-3) in his five seasons as Bengals coach.

PREDICTION: Bengals, 20-16

GAME: Arizona Cardinals (5-11) at San Francisco 49ers (7-9) 10:15 p.m., Monster Park

THE SKINNY: Ken Whisenhunt makes his debut as Arizona coach against a team the Cardinals have beaten the past four times. But, the 49ers are a team on the rise.

PREDICTION: 49ers, 34-31
