Esposito out for rookie event

Add No. 1 draft choice Angelo Esposito to the list of no-shows for the Penguins' rookie tournament in Ontario. Esposito will skip the event because of a groin injury, although team officials hope he will be ready for start of training camp Sept. 13.

Defenseman Alex Goligoski, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, and center Keven Veilleux, who had an operation to repair a sports hernia, also will miss the tournament in Kitchener.

The round-robin tournament will feature prospects from the Penguins, Ottawa, Toronto and Florida. Each team will play the others once, beginning Friday, to determine the matchup for a championship game Monday evening. Twenty-three prospects, headlined by highly regarded defenseman Kris Letang, are on the Penguins' tournament roster.

Meanwhile, the Penguins will unveil their version of the NHL's new Rbk EDGE uniform at 6:30 tonight in the food court of the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills. Players Ryan Whitney, Brooks Orpik, Maxime Talbot and Ryan Malone will attend. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m..

Maple Leafs forward Mark Bell was suspended indefinitely without pay by the NHL after his plea last month of no contest to drunken-driving and hit-and-run charges. He will serve six months in a California jail at the end of next season. To be reinstated he will need approval from the NHL and the NHL players' union after consultation with program doctors.

Pierre Turgeon is expected to end his 19-season NHL career by announcing his retirement today. Turgeon, an unrestricted free agent, is expected to retire after groin and calf injuries limited him to only 17 games last season with the Colorado Avalanche.

Florida Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester pleaded guilty to one count of impaired driving. He was fined $1,000 and banned him from driving for a year.

Basketball

Jennifer Reimer, the winningest women's coach in Allegheny College history, has resigned to take a similar job at Case Western Reserve. She leaves the Meadville, Pa., school with a 120-68 career record.

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, 74, pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced to five years' probation. He also was fined $1,900.

Golf

Phil Mickelson withdrew from the BMW Championship in Lemont, Ill., one day after threatening not to play over a conflict he had with PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem over issues he wouldn't explain. Mickelson was playing a corporate outing with sponsor Bearing Point in the Chicago area and could not immediately reached for comment.

Tennis

Andy Roddick, James Blake and the Bryan brothers once again will represent the United States in Davis Cup play, this time for the semifinal matchup at Sweden later this month. Captain Patrick McEnroe made it official, picking the top two Americans in singles and the No. 1-ranked doubles duo of Bob and Mike Bryan.

Football

The Pittsburgh RiverRats have announced the hiring of Tim Naulty as the team's new general manager. a Munhall native, he was the team's director of marketing and assisted in game day operations and community relations this past season.

Soccer

A new pro women's soccer league plans to get under way after the Women's World Cup and the Olympics. Its launch has been bumped back a year to 2009, when the seven-team pro Women's Soccer LLC is set to begin in the spring. Teams will be based in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis, and Washington.

Forward Jacek Przednowek scored two goals in leading Robert Morris (3-0) to a 3-1 victory against Pitt.

Roller Derby

The Steel City Derby Demons will conclude their first roller derby league season at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with a championship match between the undefeated Bitch Doctors and the Hot Metal Hellions at BladeRunners in Harmarville.
