Allegheny County Council sets tax hearing
Tuesday, September 04, 2007

Allegheny County Council today scheduled a public hearing at 5 p.m. Oct. 2 to discuss possible alcohol and car rental taxes.

The taxes -- up to 10 percent on each alcoholic drink and up to $2 a day on rental cars -- would be used to generate the county's share of funding for Port Authority of Allegheny County. The county successfully lobbied the state Legislature earlier this year for permission to establish the taxes as an alternative to using real estate tax revenue to pay for transit.

The proposed county ordinances to establish the taxes don't specify how much would be charged for either tax.
