WPIAL Class A Roundup: Monessen tops longtime rival Charleroi, 28-17

Two fourth-quarter touchdowns lifted Monessen to a 28-17 victory against rival Charleroi last night. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the rivalry. Charleroi leads the series 47-43-9. Monessen's Cordero Jackson rushed for three touchdowns and Adam Caputo connected with Tim Tyree for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Caputo was 9 for 13 for 147 yards and an interception. After trailing at halftime, Charleroi, a Class AA team, took an early second-half lead 17-14 on a Josh Farner 7-yard touchdown run.

OTHER GAMES

Clairton 41, Jefferson-Morgan 2

The Bears returned two punt returns for touchdowns, and Manny Williams and Zaire Washington both rushed for two touchdowns in the first half as host and WPIAL No. 1-ranked Clairton powered past Jefferson-Morgan.

Washington rushed for 133 yards. Andrew Currington and Deontae Howard returned punts for touchdowns.

Rochester 47, Westinghouse 20

Six Rams scored as WPIAL No. 2 Rochester blew past the City League's Westinghouse. Trey Johnson had two touchdowns. Preston Johnson, Paul Everson, Derek Gallagher and Jonathan Moore also had touchdown runs.

Serra 40, North Catholic 14

The Eagles scored 23 unanswered second-half points to pull away from visiting North Catholic. Serra running back Isaiah Jackson had three touchdown runs and rushed for 125 yards on 24 carries. Chris Loving led No. 3 ranked Serra with 132 yards on 12 carries.

Springdale 35, Oliver 6

Three different Springdale running backs had touchdown runs as the No. 4-ranked Dynamos overpowered defending City League champion Oliver.

Adam Shepherd rushed for 121 yards on eight carries and scored on runs of 16 and 4 yards. Nathan Zurisko and Brian Zoller each had 8-yard touchdown runs.

Beth-Center 19, Carmichaels 13

Drew Markovich scored the game winning touchdown on a 9-yard run for No. 5 Beth-Center. Chris Stay had a touchdown run and caught a Dominick Moore touchdown pass to send the game into halftime tied at 13.

Avonworth 20, Southmoreland 17

Avonworth recovered a fumble with four minutes to play on their own 20 and Ben Donovan scored from 2 yards out for the win. Khiry Watts rushed for 163 yards on 23 carries and had touchdown runs of 41 and 8 yards.

Bishop Canevin 21, Fort Cherry 14

Lou DiPaolo rushed for a touchdown and completed touchdown passes of 25 and 31 yards to Dan Hrapla including the winning score in the third quarter. Josh Snatchko returned a punt 65 yards and a fumble 31 for touchdowns.

Leechburg 20, Langley 12

The Blue Devils overcame a 12-0 halftime deficit to defeat host Langley of the City League. T.J. Phillips ran for a 1-yard touchdown and connected with Stephen Meidus for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Meidus carried 18 times for 94 yards and caught six passes for 69 yards.

Mapletown 18, Bentworth 6

Brandon Geisel accounted for all Mapletown's scoring with touchdown runs of 55 and 5 yards and a 70-yard punt return. He ended with 171 yards on 16 rushes.

West Greene 19, Chartiers-Houston 18

Keith Watson caught a 14-yard fourth quarter touchdown pass from Tucker Conklin for the Pioneers but Watson's most important play came on his first quarter extra-point after a Conklin 7-yard touchdown run. It was the only conversion made in the game.

Geibel 8, Avella 6

Mick Betler connected with Ty Erdely for a 48-yard touchdown and then with Nolan Zavora on a 2-point conversion pass that proved to be the difference.
