ART

Mt. Lebanon -- South Hills Art League will accept registrations for its 2007 new member screening from Tuesday through Sept. 17. Screenings are at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills, 1240 Washington Road. Artists 18 years or older, living in the Tri-State area, may participate. There is no screening fee. Artists are required to present three original pieces in the same medium and style. To register, call 724-941-8843.

DINING OUT

Munhall -- St. Rita Parish, 219 W. Schwab Ave., will hold a spaghetti dinner from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 9, with a bake sale, auction and raffle. Eat in or take out. Tickets are $6 adults; $3 children younger than 12. Call 412-461-4240.

GARDENING

Peters -- Kathryn Giarratani, a master gardener and past chair of the Western Pennsylvania Unit of the Herb Society of America, will give tips on establishing a culinary herb garden during a Giant Oaks Garden Club meeting at 1 p.m. next Thursday. HEALTH

Green Tree -- PA Connecting Communities, a nonprofit for individuals with disabilities, will host a free breast cancer awareness training program, The First Step Workshop, at noon and 6 p.m. next Thursday at the Green Tree Holiday Inn. The workshop, funded by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, is open to women of all abilities and teaches the importance of performing self-breast exams, annual doctor visits and mammograms. Mt. Lebanon -- St. Clair Hospital Nutritional Services Department will offer a seven-week weight reduction program, A Weigh of Life, starting Sept. 6. Sessions are available from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Fridays, and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays. Classes are facilitated by a registered dietitian, and include nutritional education, weekly weigh-in, individualized meal plans and group support. Fee is $85. To register, call 412-942-2171.

Mt. Lebanon -- St. Clair Hospital, in partnership with Highmark's Healthy High Five Initiative, will hold a nine-week KidShape program from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Sept. 12, in the second floor Conference Center, 1000 Bower Hill Road. Cost is $50. The program is designed to give overweight children, age 6-14, and their families tools for eating healthfully, exercising daily and building self-esteem, and helping them to recognize obstacles that lead to overeating. Pleasant Hills -- Pleasant Hills Lions Club will sponsor its annual AMBA Wellness blood screening from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Pleasant Hills municipal building, 410 E. Bruceton Road. SUPPORT

Bethel Park -- The Health Ministry of Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, will offer an 11-session grief support class at 7 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 17-Dec. 3. The faith-based group will be facilitated by bereavement counselor Jerry Sattinger and parish nurse Lois Slocum. THEATER

Pittsburgh/Upper St. Clair -- Adults with disabilities will be among the singers, dancers and production assistants in a musical called, "Agape: The Stories and the Feast!" at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Duquesne University, Student Union fourth-floor ballroom, Uptown; and at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at St. Louise de Marillac Church, 310 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair. The Marty Haugen production features gospel tempos with soft background vocals during the narration of Bible stories. Proceeds will benefit The Celebration of Life, a nonprofit serving adults with developmental disabilities. Cost is $35 for adults, and $10 for children and students with valid identification.
