WPIAL Class A Team to Beat: Bears hope to avoid all traps
Wednesday, August 29, 2007

It isn't Springdale or Wilkinsburg.

It isn't Riverview or Leechburg, either. And everyone knows it is impossible for it to be Duquesne.

Clairton's biggest opponent this year might be complacency.

"That is something that we definitely have to guard against," Clairton coach Tom Nola said.

"It is something that we have talked about a lot. We know that we can't be satisfied with what we did last year."

But what the Bears did last year and what they are expected to do over the next few months has earned them the distinction of being the Post-Gazette's preseason No. 1 WPIAL Class A team and No. 2 in the PIAA.

"That is a little burdensome, but it is also a product of our hard work," said Nola, who has a 43-16 record heading into his sixth season at Clairton.

The talent is most abundant on defense, where senior linebackers Manny Williams, Kurtis Rassan and Jeff Thompson are among the WPIAL's best and defensive end/linebacker Quintin Brody and junior defensive tackle David Spence are top-notch. Williams recently committed to Pitt, and Rassan is a Toledo recruit.

On offense, senior running back Zaire Washington will be a top option, and Nola will employ a two-quarterback system with juniors Troy Webb and Andrew Currington splitting the duties.

"Everyone in that group, athletically, is as good as I have seen," Nola said.

"Like I said, athletically, they are very good, but they still have to go prove it this year."
