Pirates complete Morris trade with minor-league pitcher
Monday, August 27, 2007

The Pirates completed the Matt Morris trade by sending minor-league reliever Steve MacFarland to the San Francisco Giants.

MacFarland, a 21-year-old right-hander who was the Pirates' ninth-round draft pick last year, went 3-2 with a 4.80 ERA in 39 appearances for Class A Hickory, including one start. He struck out 69 and walked 48 in 65 2/3 innings.

The July 31 trade brought Morris to the Pirates and sent center fielder Rajai Davis and a minor-league player to be named later -- MacFarland, as it turned out -- to the Giants.

San Francisco was given a list of pitchers from which to choose -- one that, according to a Giants source, included two on the 40-man roster -- and MacFarland was their choice after taking three weeks to decide. MacFarland was not on the 40-man roster.
