Doctor arraigned in autistic boy's death
Thursday, August 23, 2007

A Butler County doctor turned himself in today to authorities who have charged him in connection with the death of a 5-year-old boy who died while under his care.

Dr. Roy Eugene Kerry, 68, of Sharpsville, who practices in Portersville and Greenville, Mercer County, was released on his own recognizance following arraignment before District Judge Cliff Woessner of Slippery Rock.

Dr. Kerry is charged with felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child as well as a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person.

State police at Butler allege Dr. Kerry was grossly negligent in ordering that Abubakar Tariq Nadama receive an intravenous push of a chemical solution that removed too much calcium from the child's bloodstream, causing a fatal heart attack.

The death occurred Aug. 23, 2005, in Dr. Kerry's Portersville office. Dr. Kerry had prescribed two other similar chelations as an unconventional treatment for autism. A nurse in Dr. Kerry's office had administered the third treatment at Dr. Kerry's direction, according to authorities.
