Four months after marrying a woman more than 60 years his junior, Joe Hardy, founder of 84 Lumber Co. and a Fayette County commissioner, has filed for divorce.

Mr. Hardy, 84, filed Monday in Fayette County Common Pleas Court for a divorce from Kristin Georgi, 23, his third wife.

The three-page filing provides few details about the reasons for the divorce, but asserts that Mr. Hardy "avers that the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken."

The couple were married May 5 in Las Vegas.

All over Fayette County yesterday, residents were buzzing about the short-lived marriage.

Ronette Legrain, 39, of Brownsville, said of the short marriage, "It was a surprise. I would have given it a year, but it lasted three months. Now that was a quick one."

Ms. Legrain said she got a kick out of the divorce filing that cited irreconcilable differences between a man and a woman so young she could be his great-grandchild. "You think?" she said sarcastically. "There is only a 62-year gap. You think there are some differences there?"

"Usually men go through crises in midlife. Not him. In his 80s, you think he would be settling down."

Jeff Nobers, a spokesman for Mr. Hardy, declined comment, saying it was a personal matter. His attorney also declined comment, as did Ms. Georgi's family.

In the weeks leading up to their wedding, people saw the couple out in public. He showered her with expensive gifts, including a Porsche and a big wedding ring.

Ms. Georgi has a son who is about 3 years old from a previous relationship. She met Mr. Hardy while she was doing his nails at the posh spa at Nemacolin where she worked, residents said.

Mr. Hardy's daughter, Maggie Hardy Magerko, now president of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands, did not return phone calls.

The most recent Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans estimated her wealth at $2 billion. Her father did not make the latest list.

Mr. Hardy was married for more than 50 years to his first wife, Dorothy, with whom he had five children. After the couple's divorce in 1997, he married Debra Maley, an 84 Lumber employee who was then 26, and they had two daughters before that marriage ended in divorce. Mr. Hardy was 74 at the time of that marriage.
