Correctional officers union is unhappy with state eliminating jobs
Friday, August 17, 2007

A correctional officers union is unhappy that the state might privatize the jobs of 200 guards who now work at the state's eight mental hospitals.

Donald G. McNany, president of the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, criticized the state Department of Public Welfare yesterday for seeking bids from private companies to provide security guard services now performed by his members.

The department unveiled the possible privatization move on Wednesday, as part of its announcement that it will close Mayview State Hospital in Allegheny County at the end of 2008. That closure, aimed at reducing costs, would leave the state with seven mental hospitals.
