Statewide trans fat taskforce created
Tuesday, August 14, 2007

A statewide task force to research and address the health effects of trans fat was announced today.

"Heart disease is the number one killer of Pennsylvanians and people who live in the United States," said State Health Secretary Dr. Calvin B. Johnson in a release announcing the task force. "It is time for health advocates, policy makers and the food industry to take a serious look at how trans fat may contribute to the development of heart disease and other serious, preventable health concerns."

Trans fat is formed when food manufacturers turn liquid vegetable oils into solid fats by adding hydrogen; it is done to increase the shelf life and maintain the flavor of foods.

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began requiring food manufacturers to list trans fat content on nutrition facts labels. A number of state and local governments around the country have banned the use of trans fats.

The Pennsylvania task force will write a report and list resources to help the public understand and avoid trans fat. It will review legislation in other states and cities and make recommendations for Pennsylvania.
