Ed Bouchette's daily question
Sunday, August 05, 2007

Question:

With this being Faneca's last season with the Steelers is there any chance Willie Colon could play left guard next year? Is it a big switch for an offensive lineman to play on the other side of the line? The Steelers did it with Marvel Smith.

Gary Williams, Chester, England

BOUCHETTE: It's like trying to drive on the other side of the road when we visit England, Gary. If Colon does not win the starting job, he may very well be the swing-man between guard and tackle and that could require him at some point to play left guard, but only if Alan Faneca is hurt. Faneca will play left guard. There's absolutely no thought of not playing one of the best guards in the league merely because he's in the last year of his contract. Think of some of the players who did well in the last year of their contract before moving on, including Antwaan Randle El, who helped them win a Super Bowl. It does take some adjustment for linemen when they move from one side to the other, including which hand to put on the ground when they line up.
