Pat McCarthy, Northland Public Library volunteer coordinator, was named a 2007 Lifelong Access Libraries Fellow by the Americans for Libraries Council.

She was expected to join other fellows at a workshop in North Carolina through tomorrow.

The group will focus on services to baby boomers.

As part of her library duties, Ms. McCarthy works with the Northland Public Library Foundation and Boomer Connections to develop programs and opportunities for baby boomers in this region.

George Martin, of the North Side, a member of Allegheny Elks Lodge No. 339, was installed as the new leader of the Metropolitan District of the Pennsylvania State Elks Association at the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Lodge Convention July 8-12 in Charlotte, N.C.

As the national representative for the area, Mr. Martin will work with local lodges to fulfill the organization's commitment to promote charity and patriotism.

Shaler Area School District will induct the following to its Athletic Hall of Fame during a banquet Sept. 22: Mike Bacasa, basketball, soccer, track; Dave Fortun, coach/teacher; Thomas Gralewski, community supporter; Mike Handza, hockey; Rick LaFerriere, player/coach; Kevin Nellis, wrestling; and the 1947-48 Shaler football team.

Rachel Jones, of Ohio Township, received the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award at the recent Pennsylvania Dietetic Association's annual meeting at Sheraton Station Square Hotel, Pittsburgh.

The award is for applicants 35 and younger who have made a significant impact on the profession in a short period of time.

Ms. Jones is a nutritionist and project manager for the Scientific Affairs division of General Nutrition Corp. She is the Pittsburgh Dietetic Association's chairwoman for National Nutrition Month and for public relations and heads its annual meeting planning committee.

North Allegheny School District will induct the following into its Hall of Fame during a banquet Oct. 11: Jessica Brungo, Valerie Fawcett McCormack, Tony Hindley, Jason Lammers, Maureen O'Hare and Ryan Tolhurst.

Patricia Balok will receive the Bob Miller Award as an outstanding supporter of district athletics, and Bobby Wright will receive the Joseph Drazenovich Award for his legendary service to district athletics.

Harts Run Hunt Pony Club in Hampton recently up-rated five members.

Sydney Christman, 12, of Saxonburg, rated C1 to C2. Jacqueline Gajewski, 16, of Hampton, rated D3 to C1. Elizabeth Larkin, 13, of Hampton, rated D2 to D3. Erika Allen, 14, of Saxonburg, rated D2 to D3. Laura Langford, 17, of Gibsonia, rated D2 to D3. The testing was held at the Lauver Stables on Cedar Run Road in Hampton.

To earn new ratings, members passed an examination that tested horsemanship skills and knowledge.

Two Hampton residents were recognized at the Pennsylvania State Education Association annual Friends of Education Awards Dinner at the Holiday Inn in Green Tree this spring. The award is presented to individuals who have significantly benefited students and teachers in a school district.

The awardees are Debbie Kruper and Judy Pottgen.

Ms. Kruper is a school bus driver in Hampton Township School District who was honored for making a positive connection with students, especially those living in the Poff community. She is credited with providing a caring, encouraging climate for her bus riders, helping the children start and end their days with a smile.

Ms. Pottgen was recognized for numerous kind acts and unending support to the benefit of teacher Janet Konig's French students for 20 years. She began as a volunteer in the class during the 13 years in which her daughters were students in Hampton High School. She has been a chaperone, French Club activity hostess. When her daughters were students, she helped them bake for their French classes and club activities. Ms. Pottgen also volunteers her time as a guest reader in Joanne Greer's first-grade classroom at Wyland Elementary. She reads, and then donates the book every Friday to Ms. Greer's students.

Richland resident Dr. David L. Somers was recently voted a Teacher of the Year at Duquesne University.

An associate professor in the physical therapy department in the John G. Rangos School of Health Sciences, Dr. Somers specializes in neuroscience and research.

He has received research grants from, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health, the Hunkle Foundation and the State Health Formula Research Fund. He has a doctorate in anatomy and cell biology, a master's degree in health sciences and a bachelor's degree in physical therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina.

The Teacher of the Year award was established at Duquesne in 1992 by the university's chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society, to enable students to recognize faculty members who exemplify leadership and excellence in the classroom.
