The fact of the matter is, there has been no more competition for the No. 1 job at right guard than at, say, left guard. It's not so much the lack of push from behind as it is Kendall Simmons has put the job under lock and key. That's not surprising considering he was the starting right guard since the Steelers drafted him in the first round in 2002 (except for the 2004 season he missed with a torn ACL).
