Dunn, who rushed for a team-high 1,140 yards last year, hurt his back in offseason workouts and had the surgery Saturday. The team held off revealing the news while it dealt with the federal indictment of quarterback Michael Vick on charges related to dogfighting.
Vick, indicted last week, was barred from training camp by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell while the league looks into possible violations of its new personal conduct policy. Meanwhile, the Falcons have another major hole to fill during the preseason while Dunn recovers.
"I felt some discomfort in my back and legs that just never subsided," Dunn said in a statement released by the team. "After consulting with the medical staff, it was recommended that we have the surgery."
If Dunn, 32, needs a full month to recover, he would miss all of training camp and the first two preseason games. But he should be back in time for the Sept. 9 opener at Minnesota.
Bills
Being a rookie, linebacker Paul Posluszny had no intention of keeping Buffalo waiting or risking himself falling behind. This second-round draft pick from Penn State and Hopewell High School signed a four-year deal potentially worth over $5 million, a day before the start of training camp ensuring he won't miss the Bills' first practice today.
Posluszny's new deal includes $2.55 million in guaranteed money and is worth $4.75 million overall. It also includes $325,000 in incentive clauses for the player selected 34th overall out of Penn State after he set a school record with 372 career tackles in 44 games.
Chiefs
Three-time Pro Bowl running back Priest Holmes will report to the Kansas City's camp Saturday in a surprise development that comes 21 months after he was knocked out of football by a devastating hit. The return of the team's career leading rusher adds an interesting twist to the situation surrounding Pro Bowl running back Larry Johnson, who has vowed to hold out of camp until he gets a new contract.
Bears
Lance Briggs is going to play and not sit. Chicago's Pro Bowl linebacker agreed to a one-year, $7.2 million contract as the team's franchise player. Unhappy when he was initially given the tag, Briggs had threatened to sit out the season but reached an agreement one day before the Bears are to report to training camp. The deal came together after the Bears agreed to not put the franchise tag on Briggs in 2008 and give him a $1 million advance.
Titans
Tennessee agreed to terms with veteran receiver Eric Moulds, adding some needed experience to the roster for quarterback Vince Young. The 11-year veteran spent 2006 with Houston after playing for Buffalo his first 10 seasons in the NFL. He has caught at least 67 passes in each of his past nine seasons, which is more than anyone caught for Tennessee in 2006.
Raiders
Oakland signed running back Michael Bush to a contract, making him the seventh draft pick inked to a deal by the team. Bush, one of Oakland's two fourth-round selections, was considered one of the top running backs in Division I before his leg was broken in Louisville's opener against Kentucky last year.
Giants
Backup safety Jason Bell was placed on injured reserve because of a back injury. Bell, who appeared in 15 regular-season games and a playoff game last season, aggravated his back during offseason conditioning.
