City continues glass celebrations: 7/25/07

Check in weekly for listings of new exhibitions and activities of the yearlong Pittsburgh celebration of all things glass.

Tonight -- 6 p.m., lectures by Beth Lipman, who coordinates the Arts/Industry Residency program at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wis.; Ingalena Klenell, who co-manages Edsbjorke Studioglas near Sunne, Sweden; Eddie Bernard, owner of Wet Dog glass, LLC, in New Orleans and founder of the New Orleans Creative Glass Institute to help revive the New Orleans glass community post-Katrina; and glassblower Nadine Saylor of Pennsylvania. Tomorrow -- 9 a.m.-1 p.m., "Lunch and Learn," begins at Phipps Conservatory with a tour of "Chihuly at Phipps: Gardens of Glass," followed by lunch and a tour of "Viva Vetro! Glass Alive! Venice and America" at Carnegie Museum ($58, $48 members, lunch in Carnegie Cafe included; register at 412-622-3288).

Tomorrow -- 6-10 p.m., "Phipps' Garden Groove," live music, three drinks, hors d'oeuvres and two Dale Chihuly sculptures in the outdoor garden of Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens ($20, tickets may be purchased at tickets.conservatory.org or call 412-622-6915, ext. 6803). A limited number of discounted tickets are available to tour all of "Chihuly at Phipps: Gardens & Glass" this evening.

Tomorrow -- 7 p.m., exhibiting photographers respond to works in "The Looking Glass," the second of four evenings featuring different photographers each time. Silver Eye Center for Photography, 1015 E. Carson St., South Side (free, refreshments; 412-431-1810).

Saturday -- 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., Glass Paperweight workshop. Participants visit "Chihuly at Phipps," watch a video on Chihuly's glass technique, and then make a paperweight in the Hot Shop of the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Bring a brown-bag lunch ($94, $85 members; register at 412-441-4442).

Saturday -- 10 a.m., weekly glassblowing demonstration and tour, Pittsburgh Glass Center ($10, $5 children; 412-365-2145).

Saturday and Sunday -- 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 32nd Annual Glass Show & Sale, featuring glass by Duncan & Miller, Fostoria, Imperial, Fenton and others. Alpine Club, 735 Jefferson Ave., Washington ($4). Also, an antique glass auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Three Rivers Auction Company, West Beau and Washington streets, Washington. Show and auction benefit Duncan & Miller Glass Museum.
