Duquesne students heading to East Allegheny, West Mifflin
Friday, July 20, 2007

Students from the Duquesne High School will attend East Allegheny and West Mifflin Area high schools in the fall, state Secretary of Education Gerald Zahorchak announced this afternoon.

Duquesne's state-appointed Board of Control voted about six weeks ago to close the district's high school, and the Legislature granted Dr. Zahorchak the authority to assign the nearly 200 students to nearby school districts.

While East Allegheny and West Mifflin were widely believed to be the districts to be getting the Duquese students, Dr. Zahorchak made it official today.

He said 65 percent of Duquesne's High School students will go to West Mifflin, and the balance to East Allegheny. Duquesne students will have an opportunity to register for one school or the other; if demand for one school is too high, a lottery will be held in Duquesne's auditorium Aug. 3. Students will receive written notice of their school assignments the week of Aug. 6.

Meanwhile, East Allegheny and West Mifflin will provide information about their schools at an orientation session for Duquesne students at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Duquesne's cafeteria.

Duquesne School District will continue to operate its own program for elementary and middle-grade students.
