MINOR-LEAGUE REPORT

Tuesday's results

INDIANAPOLIS (49-46) lost to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 12-1. RHP Runelvys Hernandez (0-4, 3.03), signed yesterday as a minor-league free agent, allowed six unearned runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out one. RHP Jesse Chavez (3.49) allowed six runs in one inning of relief. SS Brian Bixler (.290) went 1 for 4 with a hit batsman and an RBI.

ALTOONA (47-46) lost to Bowie, 6-1. LHP Josh Shortslef (2-9, 4.24) pitched one scoreless inning and had to be removed when the game was delayed by a power outage. CF Andrew McCutchen (.242), back after missing two games to a minor groin injury, went 0 for 3 with a walk. 3B Neil Walker (.295) went 2 for 4. 1B Steve Pearce (.322) went 0 for 3.

LYNCHBURG (41-50) beat Winston-Salem, 7-6. LHP Kyle Bloom (8-7, 4.42) allowed four runs in five innings. RF Brad Corley (.269) went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs.

HICKORY (41-52) beat Lexington, 5-1. RHP Brad Clapp (4-7, 5.91) allowed one unearned run and seven hits in seven innings. 2B Jim Negrych (.294) went 3 for 4 with a double, a walk and three RBIs.

STATE COLLEGE (13-14) lost at Hudson Valley, 5-1. RHP Moises Robles (1-5, 4.46) allowed four runs in six innings. SS Michael Ambrose (.284) went 1 for 4.

BRADENTON (9-14) was off.

When Shane Youman is effective, the bats are barely making a peep.

When he is not, as was the case in the 6-2 slam dunk by the Colorado Rockies last night at PNC Park, things are quite a bit louder.

"Shane battled through five innings," manager Jim Tracy said. "He didn't have his good command, and that's something that has to be there for him to be successful."

That, of course, is because Youman's 88-mph fastball is not going to make up for a lack of precision and movement.

On this night, he was charged with five runs -- four earned -- along with eight hits and two walks in his five innings. That dropped his record to 2-1 since his recall from Class AAA Indianapolis.

To hear Youman tell it, one pitch was critical: He had given up a single and a walk to open the second inning, and he had an 0-2 count to .228-hitting Jeff Baker. But he hung a slider, and Baker fired it up the middle for the first of four Colorado runs that inning.

"Honestly, I felt pretty good in this game," Youman said. "I had to battle a little in the second, but I really feel like the game was decided on that pitch to Baker. If I make a better pitch there, get him out, the outcome could have gone our way."

Wavering on Van Benschoten

Tracy said that struggling John Van Benschoten will remain in the rotation "for now."

Van Benschoten is listed as the starter for Sunday against the Houston Astros, but Tracy said the team would consider "a number of options," including skipping Van Benschoten. The Pirates are off tomorrow, so Shane Youman could be pushed up a day.

Tony Armas seems the most likely choice to replace Van Benschoten, should the Pirates go that route, but Tracy declined to take a question on the subject.

Options are negligible at Indianapolis now, with Bryan Bullington having struggled for most of the past month.

Buried treasure

Littlefield declined to say if he would entertain a contract extension for Chacon in advance of the July 31 trade deadline. Chacon, who can be a free agent this winter, told the team early this month that he would prefer to stay put.

Third baseman Jose Bautista, on the disabled list because of a gash on his left hand, will fly today to Bradenton, Fla., to begin his rehabilitation.

Josh Fogg's victory last night for the Rockies was his 20th at PNC Park, extending his stadium record in that category.

The Chicago Cubs' acquisition of catcher Jason Kendall from the Oakland Athletics has no bearing on the amount of money the Pirates will pay the Athletics this season, which is $5.5 million.
