HOMEWOOD: Jazz Workshop Inc., an educational program, sponsors a free blues/rock/jazz concert by Harold Betters from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Homewood branch, 7101 Hamilton Ave., as part of its outdoor Jazz on the Steps 2007 series. Call 412-362-8416.

FRIDAY

NORTH SIDE: Carnegie Science Center offers two Wizard School Sleepovers, from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 the next morning, today and Aug. 10. Aspiring young wizards can discover the science behind charms and spells, learn supernatural experiments, participate in a scavenger hunt and peek at stars in the observatory. NORTH SIDE: Animal Friends holds its annual "Weinerschnitzel Bark & Brew" from 6 to 10 p.m. at Penn Brewery, 800 Vinial St., with some of the shelter's four-footed residents in attendance. SATURDAY

EAST LIBERTY: Station Street Hot Dog and Sandwich Shop, 6290 Broad St., hosts a six-minute Hot Dog Eating Contest at 1 p.m. as part of its grand opening and in observance of July as National Hot Dog Month. First prize winner receives $300, a color television and case of hot dogs. Call 412-365-2121.

OBSERVATORY HILL: Citiparks' Stars at Riverview Jazz Series concert from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Riverview Park features Patrick Arena. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

SUNDAY

DOWNTOWN: First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh, 320 Sixth Ave., holds a Lunch & Learn program from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in its cafeteria. George and Gail McBane, missionaries working for the Outreach Foundation in Pakistan since 1972, are the featured speakers. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger.
