Quality shows in model cars, just as it does in the ones that they replicate. And if you're looking for high quality 1:64 scale muscle cars, look no further than Greenlight Models' Stock & Custom Collection. These little gems are superbly done, putting the 4-year-old company atop the heap in terms of making the highest quality, most detailed models in the 1:64 scale models.
The third series is particularly nice, and it includes some cars that you won't find in any other scale. It includes stock and custom models of the 1965 Dodge Coronet 426, the 1972 Oldsmobile 442, 1971 Dodge Charger R/T, the 2006 Camaro Concept, and the 2007 Ford Mustang GT/CS convertible. There's also a 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda, but instead of matching that model in a custom version, there's a modified 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda 383 in the collection.
Greenlight President Kevin Davies said his team was particularly proud of its 1:64 designs. "We're trying to spend as much time on the front end, developing the molds and making sure that the prototype and the molds are as authentic as is humanly possible."
The design, quality and accuracy of these tiny cars are nothing short of astounding. Consider: The profiles and styling characteristics are painstakingly replicated. There are individual sets of wheels for each car that are accurate in terms of years and style, a rarity in the 1:64 business.
"Doing this is very expensive to do, and hopefully it will pay off in the long run," Mr. Davies said. "But to me, the wheels make the car. If you have a beautiful casting, a beautiful paint job, great detail and the wrong wheels, you've ruined the entire product. I've seen it done so many different times."
Emblems, painted taillights and side marker lights and decals, as well as white lettering around the tires, also are standard across the board.
Moreover, many of these cars are not yet done in other scales, and have rare "options" that were only occasionally installed on the real cars as well as features not often found on other models of the same car.
For instance, the '71 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda features a silver hood shaker, a rarely seen option on the real car. The company also makes a gorgeous apple green 1971 Dodge Charger R/T that is especially nice from its aerodynamic roof to its shaker hood and white lettered tires. And nobody else has replicated the Ford Mustang GT/CS, which makes it a prize find at toy stores.
Another of Greenlight's series is the Barrett-Jackson line, which will feature models from one of the world's best known auctions of collector, classic and muscle cars and trucks. A picture is provided with each of these cars, and you will see quickly that these models exactly replicate the auction cars, right down to the shade of paint, type of engine and tires.
There's a gorgeous 2007 Ford Shelby GT500, for instance, done in a yellow orange color. The alloy wheels are exactly as they are on the real car, and you'll also notice the highly dramatic "Cobra" emblem on the flanks of the car itself.
All of Greenlight's 1:64 models sell in stores and hobby shops for around $4. The company's Web site is www.greenlighttoys.com.
