Like some of her peers, Greensburg Salem's Rachel Roddy has been scrapbooking, choosing mementos from her sports seasons.
For Roddy, however, fitting everything into just one book might not be possible.
A three-sport standout, she is the PG East Female High School Athlete of the Year.
Roddy led Greensburg Salem to the playoffs in the three sports in which she competed this year, and steered the Golden Lions to a WPIAL Class AA volleyball title. In basketball, the Golden Lions advanced to the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals for the first time in at least two decades. In softball, they reached the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals and finished the season with just one loss.
A constant in all three of those playoff equations? Roddy, of course.
"I don't think you need to be a scientist to figure out that she was a part of all three of those teams and there was a reason they did so well," Greensburg Salem basketball coach Jen Yuvan said. "There were other great kids, but she was kind of the leader on all three of those teams."
It was the playoff run in volleyball that netted Roddy and her teammates the school's second WPIAL championship. A middle hitter, this three-year starter earned all-state honors for the second consecutive season and registered 16 kills in a 3-1 title win over West Allegheny.
"It's not even describable," she said. "It was one of the best feelings that I've ever experienced in life. Everything just clicked so well because we all got along so well."
Greensburg Salem volleyball coach Brian Switala said Roddy's natural athletic ability, combined with her innate court vision and awareness set her apart from most other players.
"Rachel was never intimidated by the situation," said Switala. "It didn't matter if we needed her to get a big kill and the other team knew she was going to get the ball, she wasn't afraid to be in that spot."
A PG East Fabulous Five selection in basketball, Roddy averaged 15.3 points and 7.8 rebounds last season, and also surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career.
She also helped the Golden Lions break out of a playoff funk. The team had reached the playoffs each of her first three seasons, but were knocked out in the first round each time.
This time around, though, the Golden Lions advanced all the way to the WPIAL Class AAA semifinals. Included in that run was a double-overtime win over West Mifflin in the quarterfinals, a game in which Roddy scored 26 points and sealed the game with an offensive rebound and two clutch free throws.
"This year, we were the first team in a long time that actually got past the first round," Roddy said. "It felt really good to be a part of that."
Roddy directed the Greensburg Salem softball team to the playoffs for the third year in a row. Despite an undefeated regular season, however, the Golden Lions were ousted in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals. Roddy was an all-section pick at shortstop this season and started each of her four years.
Although basketball always seemed the most likely college choice for Roddy, her mind-set changed this year, and she has elected to play volleyball for Point Park University. Compiling a 4.0 GPA, Roddy was awarded a Westmoreland County scholar-athlete award in May, and will major in elementary education.
Yuvan said Point Park is getting a true gem.
"I said this at the beginning of the year: Whoever ended up getting Rachel was going to be very fortunate. She's so talented that anybody would be lucky to have her."
