WQED-TV lets go of 'LifeQuest'
Saturday, June 30, 2007

WQED has canceled its long-running health and lifestyle show "LifeQuest," hosted since 1991 by Eleanor Schano. In recent years the show -- called "AgeWise" and focused on senior issues when it debuted on WQEX -- has broadcast only one new installment a month. The last original episode aired this month.

"We didn't have sufficient funding to do the show the way we [would have] loved to be able to do it," said WQED vice president of production Darryl Ford Williams. "To do a show once a month and air it every week, that doesn't reflect the level of quality I'd like to see in a show."

The final first-run show appeared June 16 at 5:30 p.m. and repeated the next day at 1 p.m. in the its usual Saturday and Sunday time slots.

Schano said she was disappointed but understood "that it was a difficult business decision."

"I have enjoyed a wide and loyal audience in my years of hosting the program, and I'm proud to have acted as their advocate," Schano said. "It's a role I will continue to embrace, and I look forward to new opportunities to provide the most cutting-edge health and wellness information to our region's older adults."

Schano said her future projects include a book that focuses on healthy aging.

Williams said stories of interest to "LifeQuest" viewers will now be rolled into WQED's "On Q." She said she hopes Schano will contribute reports for that broadcast.
