A Penn Hills man's beef with a drive-through clerk at Wendy's ended in a knuckle sandwich and police promptly served assault charges for dessert.

"He wasn't happy with the girl's attitude. Something with the fact that she didn't say please and thank you and wasn't pleasant in general," said Penn Hills police chief Howard Burton. That, according to police, is when Duane L. Williams, 46, added new dimensions to the concept of hitting on the waitress.

Police said Mr. Williams placed his order at the drive-through intercom at the Rodi Road Wendy's late Wednesday, drove to the pay window, took offense, parked his car and stormed into the restaurant demanding to see the manager.

"The manager didn't come out right away. He was busy. So the gentleman walked out the store, walked around to the drive-in window where the girl was working, pushed the window open, reached in and punched her," Chief Burton said.

That brought out the manager - and quickly. Police say the manager followed the man to his car, got the license plate and ordered up a squad car with a side of prosecution.

While the chief referred to him as "the gentleman," officers weren't inclined to cite him for gallantry. Instead, they issued a summons for simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment.

The victim was not seriously injured.

Police initially described Mr. Williams as a man from Penn Hills who lives with his mother.

Chief Burton wasn't sure if the man is a regular at the Wendy's on Rodi Road.

"Well, not now," he said.
