Carl Farrow completed 54 of 134 passes for 907 yards as a senior at Center High School. Not bad, but not the gaudy statistics some scholastic quarterbacks put up these days.
Farrow could get a chance to show what he can do throwing the ball tomorrow at Geneva College's Reeves Field. He is one of the quarterbacks who will lead Pennsylvania in the 28th annual Penn-Ohio All-Star Classic.
The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on the newly installed artificial turf at Reeves Field.
Farrow, who is 6 feet 4 and 190 pounds, will probably share quarterback duties with Rochester's Dan Camp.
"We're not sure who's going to start, but both guys are going to play a lot," said Monaca coach Shawn McCreary, who is guiding the Pennsylvania team.
Like most teams in the Class AA Midwestern Athletic Conference, Center's offense was run first, pass second. In fact, Farrow might have been better known for his abilities at safety than at quarterback. He intercepted five passes last fall.
"A lot of Division II colleges wanted me to play defense," he said before a recent Pennsylvania practice at Blackhawk High School. "But Waynesburg wanted me to play quarterback. Since I like offense, that was attractive."
In the Penn-Ohio Classic, he will play only quarterback and will have some outstanding targets. Speedy Antonio Reddic of Aliquippa is expected to line up at wide receiver as is Ambridge's Craig Bunney and New Brighton's Anthony Lay. Beaver's Josh Diamond is a tight end.
Reddic caught 21 passes for 430 yards last season, Bunney hauled in 41 passes for 691 yards and Diamond had 32 receptions for 413.
"We're going to make the game fun for players," said McCreary when asked if he plans to open up the offense. "We've got some guys with some speed, and this is the first year in a long time I can remember having Aliquippa guys on the team, which is good."
Farrow said he didn't know of any special rules for the game, forcing a team to throw a certain number of times.
"The only rule I know is the defense can't blitz, which is good for me," he said. "I won't have to worry about linebackers coming or being hit that much from the blind side."
He will operate behind a line that will include New Brighton's Zac Kasparek (6-6, 305), who is headed for Division I Akron, and Ellwood City's Stiles O'Brien (6-5, 280), a Youngstown State recruit. Riverside's Denes Veres (6-0, 270) will probably be playing in his final football game. He is headed to Notre Dame for track.
With seven linemen who check in at 265 or more, Pennsylvania will have a size advantage. The Ohio team, made up of players from schools in the Quad-County Coaches Association, has just one lineman over 260.
McCreary, who resigned as Monaca's coach to devote more time to being the high school's principal, knows size doesn't mean everything. He likes the fact the Pennsylvania team has some guys who can move.
One running back is shifty Mike Battles of Moon Area, who is headed to Edinboro. Battles rushed for 1,303 yards on 199 carries and scored 17 touchdowns last year. He also caught nine passes for 112 yards.
There also are Brandon Rue of Beaver Falls, who rushed 490 yards on 89 carries and played quarterback, and Hopewell fullback Rich Mutkus, who rushed for 495 yards on 106 attempts.
Defensively, McCreary has been impressed by Aliquippa's Mike Brown at linebacker and Ellwood City's Nick Nardone and Rochester's Tony Whiteleather in the secondary.
Camp is no slouch at quarterback, either. He passed for 1,094 yards and 14 touchdowns for Rochester and rushed 57 times for another 395 yards.
While the rivalry between the Pennsylvania and Ohio teams is friendly, things have become heated at times in games.
Pennsylvania leads the series, 19-8, but Ohio has won the past two years.
