Penn State punishes 10 football players
Four are expelled for summer semester
Tuesday, June 26, 2007
Penn State has sanctioned 10 football players for their role in an off-campus fight that sent one person to the hospital April 1.

Four players have been temporarily expelled for the summer semester that begins July 1, two others received permanent probation and four others were put on probation for one year.

Penn State posted news of the sanctions on its Web site yesterday afternoon. School spokesman Bill Mahon said the university cannot disclose the names of those punished, citing federal confidentially laws. But defense lawyers have confirmed the four players who were temporarily expelled are starting safety Anthony Scirrotto, backup defensive lineman Chris Baker, backup defensive back Lydell Sargeant and backup linebacker Jerome Hayes.

Those four, who also received permanent probation, will be eligible to return for the fall semester, pending the completion of counseling and community service. They will be allowed to participate in Penn State's preseason football camp in early August, according to Mahon.

The school's announcement confirmed what head coach Joe Paterno said during his visit to Pittsburgh last week -- that he believed no player involved would be ineligible for the season.

"I've been very appreciative of the way the university has gone about [the investigation]," Paterno said last week. "I don't think it's going to affect their eligibility."

The two players who received permanent probation also must complete counseling and community service, and the four on probation for a year must complete community service.

These sanctions are separate from any punishment Paterno may hand down to the players. Paterno has announced that all members of the team will help clean Beaver Stadium on Sundays after home games.

Scirrotto and Baker still face criminal charges in the case. They are charged with burglary, criminal trespass, simple assault and harassment. The trial is scheduled to begin in early August and could conflict with preseason camp. A judge previously dismissed charges against Sargeant, Hayes and reserve linebacker Tyrell Sales.
