Chloe Grace Li Mellon came to the United States from China last year, and she is quickly learning about the country in which she now lives. Already, she has a favorite president: Abe Lincoln. At age 2, she knows little about Honest Abe, but she loves to pronounce his name.
Chloe continues to thrive. She is talking and singing (her favorite songs are from a Woody Guthrie collection), and she loves Elmo, pasta and Dr. Seuss books. She's learning to jump and, with help from mommy and daddy, to negotiate the steps in her family's Emsworth home.
In May, the Mellons traveled to the state of Indiana so Chloe could meet her relatives. In an isolated and weather-worn farmhouse near tiny New Washington, Chloe watched professional wrestling with her feisty 92-year-old great-grandmother, Pearl Copple, then headed outside to chase chickens and ducks. A few days later, in the city of Marion, Chloe sat in a high-chair and shared a home-cooked meal with another great-grandmother, 91-year-old Grace McGlothlin, with whom she shares a name.
Some time in the next few months, Chloe will meet another close relative -- a sister. Steve and Brenda Mellon are in the process of adopting a second child from China.
