Sports Briefs: Hamburg wins World Bowl

Casey Bramlet threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns yesterday, leading the Hamburg Sea Devils past the host Frankfurt Galaxy, 37-28, in the highest-scoring World Bowl in the 15-year history of the game.

Bramlet, allocated by the Washington Redskins, was honored as the MVP in sending Hamburg to its first NFL Europa championship.

Bramlet set a record with scoring strikes to receivers Justin Jenkins, Marcus Maxwell (twice) and Josh Davis. Maxwell, of the San Francisco 49ers, caught five passes for 127 yards. J.T. O'Sullivan of the Chicago Bears threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns for the Galaxy before a crowd of 48,125 at Commerzbank Arena.

Devion Wilson had six carries for 50 yards and three touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Colts opened their season with a 63-0 win against the Rochester Renegades in the North American Football League. The Renegades were limited to 48 yards of total offense.

Quarterback Lisa Horton completed 7 of 11 passes for 210 yards and five touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Passion (9-0) routed the Erie Illusion (7-2), 63-7, in the first round of the National Women's Football Association playoffs at Cupples Stadium on the South Side.

Yachting

Swiss yacht Alinghi began its America's Cup defense in Valencia, Spain, with a 35-second victory over Emirates Team New Zealand. Alinghi, racing in SUI100, will try to extend its lead today when the best-of-nine final resumes.

Soccer

Kristine Lilly and Abby Wambach scored in the first 17 minutes, with Lilly putting home a brilliant free kick at 58 seconds, in a 2-0 victory against Brazil in an exhibition match at East Rutherford, N.J.

Freddy Adu scored once, set up the winner, and nearly added a spectacular third goal as the U.S. Under-20 men beat Chile, 2-1, in East Rutherford, N.J. This was the Americans' final game before heading to Canada for the U-20 World Cup, which starts next week.

Israel can to play host to international and club matches in Jerusalem, Haifa and Ashdod after a security review by UEFA.

Pro basketball

Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi received a two-game suspension from the WNBA for inappropriate conduct toward game officials. Taurasi was punished for her actions at the end of Phoenix's 87-84 loss to the Detroit Shock Friday night. Taurasi had 13 points and eight assists, but missed two 3-pointers in the final 13.9 seconds that would have tied the score.

Guard Becky Hammon scored 20 points to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars past the host Connecticut Sun, 71-58.

DeLisha Milton-Jones scored 22 points and the Washington Mystics defeated the host Chicago Sky, 99-86

Tennis

Defending champion Justine Henin defeated second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), in the final of the Eastbourne International in England, the final grass-court tune-up before Wimbledon begins tomorrow.

Ivo Karlovic hit 21 aces, including one at 153 mph, to earn his first Nottingham Open title in England with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Arnaud Clement.

Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia won the Ordina Open in Den Bosch, Netherlands, for his first grass-court title. Anna Chakvetadze of Russia won the women's title. The second-seeded Ljubicic beat unseeded Peter Wessels of the Netherlands, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), and third-seeded Chakvetadze beat top-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3.

Horse racing

Invasor, the 2006 Horse of the Year, was retired when a cracked bone was found in his right hind leg. Invasor won 11 races and $7.8 million during his career, including the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic last year and the $6 million Dubai World Cup in March.

Frontier League

The Washington Wild Things rallied from an early four-run deficit but still came up short against the Evansville Otters, 7-6, at Consol Energy Park. Nathan Messner's three-run homer in the third tied the score for the Wild Things.
