I made a big miscalculation. I thought taking a week off after May sweeps would give me a chance to get away and back again before the craziness of pre-press tour pilot watching would begin. Instead, I ended up falling behind on all the June cable series premieres, which set me back in watching the fall pilots.

Joe Viles/Fox Can Chuck Darling (Kelsey Grammer, R) and Kelly Carr (Patricia Heaton, L) find the magic they once had as a news team in the '90s in today's TV news scene in Pittsburgh? Their careers and personal lives have taken some interesting twists and turns, but now they are reuniting in the new comedy "Back to You" premiering this fall on Fox.

But I've finally gotten started and one of the first pilots I was eager to see was Fox's sitcom "Back to You," starring Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier") and Patricia Heaton ("Everybody Loves Raymond") as reunited Pittsburgh news anchors. So what did I think? Well, I could tell you but Fox would kill me. They send out the pilots saying, "For informational purposes only, not for review." How come? In some cases, shows will undergo major tinkering before their fall premieres and revised pilots will be sent for review later. In other cases, the networks just want to delay negative buzz from getting out as long as possible. I don't think either scenario applies to "Back to You." Still, I can't review the show as a sitcom, but I feel safe discussing its Pittsburgh-ness and mocking of TV news conventions.

It gets many of the TV news conventions accurate, though they're not always particular to Pittsburgh. The station has a Latina weathercaster, and though we certainly have had our share of attractive women offering weather forecasts, they're predominantly white and not nearly as sassy.

But the show does tap into Pittsburgh's ethnic roots by naming a reporter Gary Crezyzewski, who is sent to report from in front of the Allegheny County Courthouse. At night. During a downpour. (Score! Direct hit to local news!)

But KDKA's Ken Rice, who has acted as an unofficial adviser to executive producer Steve Levitan, a college buddy, needs to get his hands on future scripts so he can prevent this news tease, which is unlikely to ever come to pass in Pittsburgh: "Good news homeowners: Your property taxes may be going down!" Maybe it's an attempt to get an extra laugh out of Pittsburgh viewers who know that notion is a joke?

Last notes: The station in the show is WURG, Channel 9, and it must be a Fox, CW or independent station because its newscasts air at 6 and 10 p.m. The newsroom has the names of Pittsburgh communities -- Monroeville, Somerset, etc. -- emblazoned on the walls.
