A different kind of talk radio will sign on this week at Carnegie Science Center: It's GirlTalk Radio, a project designed to spark interest in science careers among young girls.
The project is a collaboration between the Science Center's Girls, Math & Science Partnership (GMSP), which is designed to get girls between the ages of 11 and 17 interested in science and technology fields, and the weekly family radio program "The Saturday Light Brigade."
The GirlTalk project involved a group of 14 students from grades 6 through 10 who learned interviewing techniques and then interviewed female scientists in a range of fields. They also learned how to use digital recording and production equipment to create the broadcasts.
GirlTalk Radio premieres tonight at the Carnegie Science Center at 6 p.m., with weekly broadcasts starting this Saturday and airing through August. "Saturday Light Brigade" airs Saturdays from 6 a.m. to noon on WRCT-FM (88.3) and WLFP-AM (1550) here, and on WSAJ-FM (91.1) in Grove City and WIUP-FM (90.1) in Indiana.
The broadcasts will also be available as podcasts on the GMSP (www.braincake.org) and "Saturday Light Brigade" (www.slbradio.org) Web sites.
