Andy Amrhein remembers going to the County Fair in South Park with his entire dozen-member family each summer in the 1960s -- because it was free.
So, when talk arose of staging a fund-raiser for the nonprofit Bethel Park Community Foundation at the South Park Fairgrounds -- the same site as the defunct fairs of his youth -- he was adamant that there be no charge for admittance.
"If a family wanted to come and socialize, they wouldn't have to spend a penny," he said.
That family-oriented, county fair-sized event, South Park Summer Rev Up and Roll Car Cruise and Craft Festival, will be held, rain or shine, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the fairgrounds, at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Corrigan Drive.
Besides the sweet smell of funnel cakes and cotton candy to stir thoughts of nostalgic summers past, the event will feature car and motorcycle cruises, craft show, live bands, auctions, raffles, children's activities, food vendors, emergency vehicle and canine dog demonstrations, and more.
Shuttles will transport patrons to the site from designated parking areas within the park.
"Our goal is to make it the biggest party the South Hills has seen in 30 years," Mr. Amrhein said.
The other event organizers are Kristen Normile and Barb Bright, both of the BPCF.
Proceeds will help the group furnish the inside of the recreation spot that is being added to the Bethel Park Community Center. Planned purchases include bleachers, volleyball and basketball equipment, aerobic room equipment, kitchenware and more.
Ceramic tiles will also be sold at the event for placement, with donors' names, in a "wall of honor" in the hallway connecting the community and recreation centers.
Ground-breaking for the recreation center occurred at the end of March, with Jan. 1 targeted for the opening.
So far in 2007, the BPCF has raised $50,000. It is aiming to raise $200,000.
The event is being held in conjunction with the Municipality of Bethel Park and the county's Department of Parks and Recreation, which is providing garbage services, police, public works, portable stage and sound system.
"It's the closest yet to bringing back the fair," said county Councilman Vince Gastgeb, R-Bethel Park.
"We're very excited to bring back a big family event to the fairgrounds," Mrs. Normile said.
