Peters Township graduates Liz Earley and Michelle Corkum competed at the NCAA Division III track and field championships for Allegheny College.

Earley, a junior, earned All-America honors by placing fourth in the hammer throw with a throw of 173-7. Terri Schwab of Wisconsin-Oshkosh took home first place in the event, using a final-toss of 198-0 to defeat the field by over 16 feet.

Corkum, a senior, competed in the 10,000-meter run. She finished last in a field of 18 runners with a time of 38:34.50.

Meanwhile, Upper St. Clair graduate Ashley Dodd also competed in the Division III championships, but did not place among the top eight in the pole vault.

Dodd, a sophomore at Waynesburg College, finished 14th in a field of 18 competitors. She cleared 11 feet, 41/2 inches to tie Megan McKenna of Monmouth College (Ill.) for 14th place.

Fourth place in NEC

Baldwin High School graduate Erica Schmidt earned a fourth-place finish at the Northeast Conference track and field championships.

Schmidt, a freshman at Robert Morris College, placed fourth in the pole vault at 10-6.

Brashear grad honored

Brashear High School graduate Matt Stanziano was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference baseball player of the year.

Stanziano, a sophomore second baseman at Pitt-Greensburg, was also a first-team selection on the AMCC all-star team. Stanziano is the first baseball player and the ninth athlete overall to be chosen as AMCC player of the year at Pitt-Greensburg.

Stanziano finished as the conference leader in batting average (.452) and stolen bases (33), and finished second in slugging percentage (.721) and on-base percentage (.512).

For much of the season, Stanziano was atop the nation among Division III players in both batting average and stolen bases per game, and he finished the season in the top 10 in each category.

He also boasted nine doubles, four triples, and four home runs. He finished as the team's leader with 34 runs scored and tied for the team-lead with 31 RBIs.

TJ graduate honored

Thomas Jefferson High School graduate Abby Greiner was voted to the third team of the College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District II all-star team.

Greiner, a junior catcher at Grove City College, set a school record with 30 runs batted in this season. Her .324 batting average ranked second on the squad and her two home runs led the team.

Greiner, a three-year starter, started all 31 games, primarily at catcher. She also saw time at third base and as a designated player.

Greiner owns a 3.79 grade-point average as a marketing/management major.

Big season for Peters grad

Peters Township High School graduate Eric Rich enjoyed a productive season as a starter for the Allegheny College baseball team.

Rich, a junior who also was a starter last season, was the only Gators player to start all 37 games, all in center field. He finished among the team leaders in nearly every statistical category, including batting average (.338, second), runs (21, tied for fourth), doubles (8, second), RBI (26, first), and stolen bases (5, first).

Rich hit safely in 27 games with 14 multiple-hit outings.
