Summer fun: Some camps still have openings

Many children in the greater Pittsburgh area already are signed up for various summer camp programs throughout the region. But last-minute applicants, don't fret; there are still plenty of openings for camps. From art to science to the outdoors, there are programs with open spots sure to fit your child's interests.

PITTSBURGH CENTER FOR THE ARTS

A variety of camps run each week at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, with about five different ones per week. Enrollment takes children up to age 17. Camps run on a one- or two-week basis, full- or half-day. Sessions run through Aug. 24. The Center's Web site includes a calendar of camps with descriptions.

FRICK ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER SUMMER DAY CAMPS

The Frick Environmental Center offers several camps throughout the summer for ages 3 to about 13. A majority of the camps are full, but a handful of spots are left in a few programs. The center's Web site lists all programs with descriptions. Call the center to check availability of specific programs.

YMCA CAMP KON-O-KWEE/SPENCER

For those 7- to 15-year-olds interested in a wildlife experience away from home, the YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee/Spencer offers several sleep-away camp options. The camp offers six one-week sessions or three two-week sessions, beginning June 25 and running through Aug. 4. The camp's Web site includes available sessions, and those interested can register at any time.

CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER SUMMER CAMPS

Offering camps ranging in themes from medical science to wizards to Pittsburgh's history, the Carnegie Science Center has a wide variety of programs that run throughout the summer. Camps accept children ages 4 to 12 in full- and half-day programs. Check the Science Center's Web site for availability, dates and descriptions.

SWEETWATER COOKING KIDS R COOKS SUMMER CAMPS

Young culinary artists can sharpen their skills at summer camps offered by Sweetwater Cooking. Children ages 6 to 18 can participate in various one- and two-week programs. Sweetwater's Web site includes dates and descriptions of each program offered.

FRICK ART AND HISTORICAL CAMPS

Kids need not abandon learning for the summer; thanks to the Frick Art and Historical Center, children can combine fun activities with history education at summer camp. A few slots are open for the full-day camp beginning Aug. 6. This session is open to children entering the second to fifth grades. Pre- and post-camp care also is available.

GYMKHANA GYMNASTICS

Gymkhana Gymnastics offers many camps throughout the summer for tumblers ages 3 to 16. Each week offers different classes, and parents can register children on a weekly basis. Camps are offered by the week or half-week and on a full- or half-day class. Call for a list of available camp sessions.

ID TECH COMPUTER CAMPS

Through iD Tech's summer camp programs, children ages 7 to 17 have the opportunity to create a Web site using Flash technology, build a robot, create an original video game and more. Campers use industry-standard products during the weeklong sessions. Children can participate in either the overnight program or the day-camp program. Space for programs is limited, so be sure to check iD Tech's Web site for availability. Schedule either online or over the phone.
