The effects of a Wednesday evening rain storm faded quickly in the afternoon sun, causing golf balls to pick up speed on Oakmont's notoriously fast greens. Surprisingly, two long ball hitters, Bubba Watson and Angel Cabrera led the field as play came to an end.
Cabrera's birdie on the last hole dropped Mickelson and several other golfers 11 strokes off the lead, one too many to make the cut.
