The second annual Motor-sports Day will take place Tuesday in Harrisburg. It will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Commonwealth Avenue behind the Capitol building.
Rep. John Payne, R-Dauphin County, and Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Cambria County, co-chairmen of the House Motorsport Caucus, said oval track racing is a big part of state's history.
"There is a full slate of raceways and drivers attending the event this year," Payne said.
Gary Risch Jr., general manager of Lernerville Speedway; Mike Graham of Tri-City Speedway; and Joe Lewandoski, Lake Erie Speedway general manager, will represent Western Pennsylvania.
Jets blast off at PRP
Five jet-powered race cars and trucks will be featured tomorrow night at Pittsburgh Raceway Park in New Alexandria, an IHRA-sanctioned 1/4-mile drag strip.
Jet funny cars will be squaring off at more than 240 mph, along with two 270-mph jet dragsters plus Les Shockley's semi truck powered by 3-jet engines. A wheel standing van will attempt to go the entire length of the track on the rear wheels only. Eliminations will begin at 5 p.m. with the jets going at 7, 8:30 and 10 p.m. Fireworks will follow.

Sharon Speedway will honor all fathers in attendance tomorrow night with Father's Day Family Fun Games during intermission. ... Del Rougeux from Frenchville, Pa., leads Brian Swartzlander of Leechburg by two points in the Modifieds. ... Sharon also will offer "Two for $2" night. Fans who bring two non-perishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank tomorrow will receive $2 off the price of an adult general admission ticket. A representative will collect the food outside the gate from 4 to 6 p.m. ... Tomorrow night at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, former PPMS late model champion Keith Barbara will sub for Lynn Geisler. Geisler, a six-time late model champ at PPMS, is third in track points.
Crate Late Model racer Joel Johns was injured Saturday in an accident between turns 1 and 2 at PPMS. Johns reportedly injured his wrist and was unable to continue. Veteran PPMS driver Kurt Habdehl, who raced an E-Mod three times in 2006, replaced Johns. ... PPMS will hold its first Topless Tuesday of the season. The Late Models and Crate Late Models will remove their roofs improving the fans view of the drivers. Racing will begin at 7 p.m.
The World of Outlaws Sprint Cars will make its season debut on ESPN2 at 11 a.m. Sunday with the first race of the "Summer of Money" from Knoxville Raceway. ... FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series will be at Raceway 7 near Conneaut, Ohio, tonight; McKean County Speedway near Bradford, Pa., tomorrow night; and at Erie Speedway in Erie Sunday. ... Mercer Raceway Park will play host to the new Crate Late Model series 3 for the Yankee 40, a $5,000 to-win feature. It was also announced by FASTRAK that the tentative event scheduled for Sept. 21 and 22 at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will not take place.

The inaugural World of Outlaws Late Model Series Firecracker 100, paying $30,000 to the winner, is scheduled for Lernerville Speedway June 29-30. A tailgate party, concert and fireworks will follow qualifying and heat races that Friday. Saturday will feature the 30-lap Uncle Sam race for the first 24 cars that do not qualify for the Firecracker 100.
