Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Attorney Frederick Thieman has been named new president of The Buhl Foundation, one of Pittsburgh's largest philanthropic groups, succeeding outgoing president Doreen Boyce, who plans to step down in July after investing a total of $100 million during her 25-year tenure with Buhl.

Mr. Thieman, who currently serves on The Buhl Foundation's board, will become the sixth president of the 80-year-old institution, which conceived of Chatham Village on Mt. Washington and the Buhl Digital Dome at the Carnegie Science Center. Its grants have also helped with the establishment of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Western Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Pittsburgh Child Guidance Center.

Mr. Thieman is currently a partner with Thieman & Ward, a firm he founded. He served as U.S. Attorney from 1993 to 1997, appointed by President Clinton. Before that, he was a practicing attorney, federal prosecutor and law clerk to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
