The United States Golf Association announced a change in parking for fans who want to watch the final practice round today at Oakmont Country Club.
Local organizers have decided to close the lot at Pittsburgh Mills Mall (the Blue Lot) sometime during the morning hours and divert spectators to Hartwood Acres (the Red Lot) for the rest of the day.
Officials didn't have an exact time when the Blue Lot would close.
Reg Jones, director of the 2007 U.S. Open, said, "It's hard to predict when it will be. People should check signs on the major routes, and it will say if the Blue Lot is open."
Organizers and law enforcement officials said the reason for the change was the larger size of the lot at Hartwood Acres, as well as the ease of access to Route 28 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike from that site.
There are 7,000 to 7,500 spaces available at Hartwood and 4,500 to 5,000 spaces at Pittsburgh Mills. All fans who attend the Open must park at one of the two facilities.
Electronic signs will be posted on both Route 28 and the Turnpike to alert fans of the closure and provide alternate directions.
According to the organizers, a one-way shuttle trip for spectators from either lot averages 17 minutes.
Fans are reminded there is no parking in the immediate area around Oakmont Country Club, which includes Oakmont and Plum. Organizers also urge local drivers to avoid the following areas so as to keep traffic moving: Hulton Road, Freeport Road and Allegheny River Boulevard.
