Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Bad habits don't die overnight.

Unfortunately, they don't make a patch that kills the craving for news about a certain someone with the initials PH.

So we're going cold turkey and soldiering on to let you know about some of the other stars orbiting planet Hollywood in this edition of the GBB.

Will Whoopi Goldberg be the new Rosie?

You know, we don't know, but Star magazine is reporting that the job's in the bag for the Oscar winner, according to an inside source at ABC.

And apparently, Whoopi is getting the year-to-year deal Rosie was trying to get.

In what would appear to be a victory for the underdog, Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, 76, won the 2007 Man Booker International Prize for fiction yesterday, beating such celebrated nominees as Philip Roth, Margaret Atwood and Ian McEwan.

Launched in 2004 as a spin-off from Britain's prestigious Booker Prize, the international trophy comes with $120,000 and is awarded every two years for a body of fiction.

CBS chief Leslie Moonves shot back at former news anchor Dan Rather, who accused his former network of "dumbing down" and "tarting up" the evening news anchored by Katie Couric.

Danny Boy was talking to MSNBC via the phone when he made the remarks, which later got picked up in N.Y. Daily News and the N.Y. Post.

Mr. Moonves, speaking at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, said Mr. Rather's comments were "sexist."

He also said he was surprised that Katie's getting such negative coverage.

"She's been on the air for nine months," he said. "Let's give her a break."

Just like CBS gave Rene Syler?

Ooh, did we say that?

Actor Dermot Mulroney of "My Best Friend's Wedding" fame and his wife, actress Catherine Keener, are calling it quits after 17 years, reports TMZ.com.

Why does anyone in Hollywood get married anymore?

The couple have a 7-year-old son, Clyde.

As if Candy Spelling doesn't have enough money, now she's adding a little extra to her coffers by hitting the slots in Vegas, reports TMZ.com.

The widow of the late television producer Aaron Spelling, and Tori's momma, reportedly won a total of $200,000 playing the $100 slots at the Bellagio.

That's just not right!

Super music producer Timbaland was arrested in Germany Monday night for allegedly beating a guy down after the man called him the n-word.

What had happened was: Tim was chilling in a hotel bar after a Justin Timberlake concert. A young woman started talking to him, but her beau was not too pleased about it and uttered the racial slur.

Some folks don't play that!

Timbaland and some of his entourage commenced to issuing a beat down, which spilled from the hotel lobby bar out into the front of the hotel.

The man went to the hospital, and Tim went to jail. He was later released on $1,000 bail.

Apparently, "Sopranos" fans are still madder than hornets over the ending of the show.

Seems somebody edited creator David Chase's Wikipedia entry to describe him as a "homosexual American television writer," reports TMZ.com. Once the Wikipedia folks found out, they disallowed any changes to David's entry.

We told y'all yesterday, you need to let go when it comes to that finale.

Hundreds of folks turned out Monday in Lansing, Mich., to honor native LaKisha Jones, fourth runner-up in this season's "American Idol," according to Eurweb.com.

Kiki stood on the steps of the capitol with Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who admitted she voted every week for the singer. Ms. Jones sang two songs for the crowd, "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls" and "God Bless the Child."

You definitely have to have pipes to tackle those two.

You go, girl!

Iraq veteran Peter Reid has gotten a boost from LeAnn Rimes.

A 2004 mortar attack in Iraq's Anbar province left Reid, a Navy Seabee, partially paralyzed, blind in one eye and dependent on a motorized wheelchair. He also suffered a brain injury, and bits of shrapnel remain in his head and body.

Reid hadn't left his Palm Bay, Fla., house for months because it took two people to lift him into and out of his van.

Now he's looking forward to shopping trips with his wife, Michele, because of a gift from Rimes.

Last week in Nashville, Tenn., the 24-year-old country singer handed Reid the keys to a new wheelchair-accessible van.

Chevrolet, the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes and Rimes, a supporter of the veterans group, teamed up to present the van to Reid.
