Meadows plans for Monday start
Wednesday, June 06, 2007

Southwestern Pennsylvania's first slots parlor, originally scheduled to open this week, will now open Monday morning.

Officials of The Meadows Racetrack & Casino said yesterday the grand opening will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Test dates, which will benefit local charities, will be held Friday and Sunday, but they will be for invited guests only and are not open to the public. Proceeds from the test dates will be given to the Greater Washington County Food Bank and The Washington Hospital.

The racetrack/casino in North Strabane, Washington County, the fifth to open in Pennsylvania and first in the Pittsburgh market, will be open 24 hours a day, with 1,738 slot machines and an all-you-can-eat restaurant in its temporary, synthetic-fabric structure. It is owned by Cannery Casino Resorts of Las Vegas.

The facility originally was to open Tuesday, but that was postponed by concerns over the effectiveness of its security cameras in monitoring activities around all of the slot machines. Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board officials said the casino could not open until improvements were made to surveillance procedures.

Officials at The Meadows say each day of waiting is costing the casino and the state about $500,000 in combined revenue anticipated from the machines.
