Vandals hit coffee house, co-op
Tuesday, June 05, 2007

Two unlikely targets bore the brunt of apparent G8 protesters on Saturday, the same day tens of thousands in Germany marched to protest the G8 summit of the world's most powerful nations, which opens tomorrow in Heiligendamm, Germany.

The Quiet Storm in Friendship and the East End Food Co-op in Point Breeze, both of which grew from grass-roots efforts and offer customers alternatives to a corporate-run cafe and grocery, respectively, were left with broken windows and graffiti after midnight Saturday and Sunday.

Neither shop reported anything stolen.

Vandals left the messages "Smash money" and "Down with G8" as graffiti at the Quiet Storm, where several windows were boarded yesterday, said Eric Tishky, an employee.

G8 protesters blame the wealthiest nations for policies that advance corporate agendas and contribute to poverty, hunger and war.

"It doesn't make any sense that this would be [directed] against a small business," said Mr. Tishky. "It seems very backward."

The coffeehouse-restaurant replaced a nuisance bar at the corner of Penn Avenue and Graham Street, in 2001. Since, it has been a popular meeting place.

Lt. Reyne Kacsuta of Zone 5 said graffiti was not part of the report the Quiet Storm made to police. She said it is a case of criminal mischief that is still being investigated, but not in relation to anti-G8 sympathizers. The food co-op's broken window is being investigated by Zone 4 police.

The food co-op had windows broken, and an anarchy symbol -- a circled 'A' -- was drawn in several places along the building's front, as was this stenciled message in red: "There are no good corporations. Stop [word intelligible] selling."

Rob Baran, the general manager of the cooperative, said he spoke with Jill McDowell, owner of the Quiet Storm "and we think it's the same folks. I can't even think of these people as anarchists."
