The Peters Township girls' lacrosse team waited a year to avenge last year's loss to Mt. Lebanon, so waiting an extra hour before the start of last night's WPIAL championship game at North Hills was not a problem.
Peters Township (21-1) spotted the three-time defending champion Blue Devils a two-goal lead before breaking loose for six goals in 5:16 of the first half en route to a convincing 14-9 victory. The game was delayed an hour because of thunderstorms.
"I can't describe how happy I am," said Peters Township attacker Paige McMenamin, who scored two goals and had three assists.
Peters Township lost to Mt. Lebanon (16-6) in the title game the previous two years, but went into last night's title match as the favorite.
"We've been rivals with them for the past three years and finally it's like, 'We got it,' " said Jenn Doran, who sparked Peters Township with three goals in less than two minutes midway through the first half to wipe out a 2-0 deficit.
Doran's three goals were followed by three goals by Alexandra Oleynik who came off the bench. That gave the Indians a 6-2 lead with 5:57 left in the first half.
Mt. Lebanon pulled within 6-4 on goals by Maria Dattilo on a free penalty shot and Lori Banky with 55 seconds left in the first half. Banky almost made it 6-5 with 35 seconds left, but hit the cross bar with a shot.
A goal by Brittany Carse pulled the Blue Devils to within 6-5 1:22 into the second half before Peters Township pulled away with five of the next six goals.
Peters Township scored three consecutive goals in a 70-second span. The outburst was capped by Laura Sunday, who sprinted 30-yard and took an uncontested shot with 20:15 left to play. Sunday scored again on a shorter sprint to the goal, making it 11-6 with 11:33 remaining.
"I had confidence in my team," said McMenamin, a Northwestern recruit. "I knew everybody was going to give it their best."
