The BRP Mod Tour '07 takes center stage tonight at Lernerville Speedway for its second event of the season. The regional Big Block Modified group consists of the area's finest drivers competing in the 30-lap, $1,300-to-win feature.
The Mod Tour kicked off its season Sunday at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa., where Russell King, 18, of Bristolville, Ohio, won the Fourth Annual Dick Rankin Memorial.
King won in a backup car owned by family friends.
"Dave and Carol Schrader are my second parents, and they know how much I love to race. I really appreciate them letting me use their car," said King, who won the event for a second time.
Leechburg's Brian Swartzlander, who has won four modified features at Lernerville this season including three in a row, is looking forward to the increased competition.
"We've been good up [at Lernerville] so far this year and we are looking forward to Friday," Swartzlander said.
"We had 34 cars on Sunday at Tri-City and I look for more cars, probably over 40, and that will be pretty good for a Friday night show."
Del Rougeux Jr. of Frenchville, Pa., is second to Swartzlander in Lernerville points and knows that while there will be plenty of cars, the toughest competition will come from the drivers he faces every Friday.
"The fast cars have already been [at Lernerville]." Rougeux said. "The boys you worry about are Swartzlander, [Jim] Weller, [Kevin] Bolland, [Jeremiah] Shingledecker. They have already been there racing with us."
Racing begins at 7:30 p.m. for the Modifieds, Late Models and Pure Stocks.
WoO wraps up Eastern swing
The World of Outlaw Sprint Cars will make their only appearance of the season at Sharon Speedway at 7 p.m. today in Hartford, Ohio.
Steve Kinser has won three WoO features at Sharon Speedway while Danny Lasoski has two victories, his most recent in 2004. Lasoski holds the track record in qualifying with a lap of 12.844 seconds.
Bob Felmlee from Oil City was the quick qualifier in '05 WoO event and has two wins at Sharon so far in '07. "I am pretty happy what we've got to there with," Felmlee said.
Like at Lernerville for the recent WoO clash, qualifying for the Outlaw race at Sharon will be difficult.
"It's tough right now, really tough to make the show," Felmlee said. "With 25 cars following the tour, our first goal is to make the race."
Donny Schatz, the 2006 WoO champion, leads the points coming into Sharon. Joey Saldana, who has one win and has led 94 laps at the track co-owned by NASCAR Nextel Cup racer Dave Blaney, is second.
All Stars visit Lernerville
The All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars visit Lernerville Tuesday for a midweek $5,000-to-win special event.
Ed Lynch Jr. leads the points at Lernerville and has four wins on the season but has had problems with his steering, which began at the World of Outlaws Commonwealth Clash a few weeks ago.
Nevertheless, Lynch along with Felmlee, Kevin Schaeffer and Dan Shetler will give the traveling circuit a run for their money.
While Lynch has seven wins running with the All Stars, Felmlee picked up his lone win in 1995.
"It was at the Sportsman's Speedway in Knox [Pa.]," Felmlee said. "It seems like a long time ago."
Felmlee likes his chances Tuesday.
"We have a shot at it for sure, but things have to go your way," he said.
"As long as I don't make mistakes and we don't do anything stupid, there is no reason why we shouldn't have a shot for a win or at least a top ten finish for sure and hopefully a top five.
The UMP Modifieds are also on the card.
