Fun while it lasted: W. Pa. loses another of its landmarks
Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Memorial Day has come and gone, but the gates of historic Conneaut Lake Park remain closed -- perhaps for good.

For those with fond memories of the Blue Streak Roller Coaster or beautiful Conneaut Lake itself, the 115-year-old amusement park was more than Crawford County's version of Kennywood for folks on a budget.

It was a provider of hundreds of summer jobs for young people, a place for couples to get married, a regional economic engine and a swell place to hear local bands one night and legends like Bob Dylan the next.

Alas, it was also $2.3 million in debt despite drawing 150,000 visitors a year. The park's managers were prohibited by a judge from borrowing money to finance a new season. Without sponsors, Conneaut Lake Park had no choice but to close down.

It is always sad when a place that has provided so many happy memories in Western Pennsylvania closes. It was an old-fashioned amusement park that one can truly say was fun while it lasted.
