Barden's casino plan approved
Tuesday, May 29, 2007

The city Planning Commission this evening unanimously approved the master plan for the proposed North Shore casino despite objections from the Steelers, the Pirates and the Carnegie Science Center.

The approval came after three hours of testimony during which the two teams pressed for a game-day traffic study to be done before the vote and the science center continued to express concern about its ability get school buses into and off its property.

The commission put two majors conditions on the approval. One establishes strict traffic requirements and calls for a detailed traffic study to be completed in September. The other relates to continued access to riverfront trails and building design.

Casino owner Don Barden was not present for the vote.
