Washington Sunday: Vulcans earn PSAC baseball honors
Sunday, May 27, 2007

The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team set a school record with 36 victories this season, but the Vulcans ended their record-breaking season with three consecutive losses.

California (36-17) made its first trip to the NCAA Division II tournament since 1983, with an appearance in the North Atlantic Regional tournament May 17-18. But the Vulcans made a quick exit after losses to Slippery Rock, 6-3, and Kutztown, 6-1.

Two weeks earlier, California dropped an 18-6 decision to Shippensburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game.

Nonetheless, California was well represented on the PSAC baseball all-star team, led by senior outfielder Lee Rohan, who was named Western Division Player of the Year. Rohan, a left fielder from Erie McDowell, was voted to the Western Division first team for the second consecutive year.

He was joined on the first team by five Vulcans teammates, including second baseman Drew Aniceti and pitcher Chris Doerschner, who were honored for the third time.

Aniceti, a junior from Blackhawk, made his second appearance on the first team after a second-team selection as a freshman. Doerschner, a senior from Carrick, was a first-team selection after two appearances on the second team.

Also on the first team were: Chris Novia, a junior designated hitter from Ontario; Jeremy Potter, a junior third baseman from Philipsburg-Osceola; and Ryan Kemerer, a sophomore infielder from New Brighton.

Dustin Woodring, a senior who split time at shortstop and first base, was voted to the second team for a second time. He is joined on the second team by three teammates: Alex Lefcakis, a junior outfielder from Plum; Andrew Rafalski, a junior relief pitcher from Montour; and Nick Schreiber, a sophomore pitcher from Greencastle-Antrim.

California coach Mike Conte was selected as PSAC Western Division Coach of the year for the fifth time in 11 seasons.

Rohan, Potter and Doerschner were also voted to the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II North Atlantic All-Region baseball team. Rohan and Potter were first-team selections, while Doerschner was voted to the second team.

Doerschner was also a first-team selection on the Daktronics Division II All-North Atlantic Region baseball team, while Rohan and Rafalski were second-team selections.
