Memorial Day will be observed by West communities with parades and ceremonies Sunday and Monday. Scheduled are:
Beaver
A parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Third and Beaver streets. It will include the USMC Color Guard, civic officials, veterans, antique cars, the JROTC Fife & Drum Corps, a mounted horse unit, the 101st Pennsylvania Regiment and more.
It continues down Beaver Street to the Beaver Cemetery's Old Receiving Chapel.
At 11 a.m. at the chapel, Arthur Cornell, president of the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation, will preside over ceremonies that include participation by the Beaver Area High School band, concert choir, ROTC, individual students and others.
Carnegie
Civil War re-enactors, Sons of Veterans, antique cars, Shriners, firetrucks and the Carlynton High School band will be part of a parade that begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carnegie borough building. It will continue on Mansfield Boulevard to West Main Street, then onto the American Legion Post 82, Jane Street.
A ceremony follows at the post at approximately 3 p.m.
Crafton
A ceremony at noon Monday at the Crafton borough building will honor two of Crafton's fallen heroes and former Carlynton High School students, Army Capt. Jason West and Marine Pvt. 1st Class Daniel Chess.
Carlynton ensembles will open the ceremony with patriotic songs.
Coraopolis
VFW Keith-Holmes Post 402 will sponsor a parade at 1:30 p.m. Monday, beginning at Chess Street and Fifth Avenue. The parade will march up Fifth and turn left onto Chestnut Street.
The Ohio Valley Band will be featured, along with American Legion units, Vietnam veterans, Iraq veterans, the 171st Air Refueling Wing, antique cars, fire departments and floats. Seven marching bands and units are expected.
Kennedy
American Legion Post 464 will sponsor a parade that begins at 9 a.m. Monday at the former Kenmawr School building, 1806 Pine Hollow Road. It continues onto Fairhaven Road to the War Memorial, where there will be a brief ceremony.
McKees Rocks and Stowe
McKees Rocks-Stowe Memorial Day Association will host Memorial Day programs that begin with a motorcade leaving VFW Post 418, Chartiers Avenue, at 9 a.m. to conduct ceremonies at neighborhood honor rolls in Norwood, Pittock, Presston, Esplen, and Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church and St. Mary Church, both in McKees Rocks.
Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner will be the speaker at an 11 a.m. ceremony at the McKees Rocks War Memorial in McKees Rocks Plaza. The Sto-Rox Vikings Band will play.
At the Stowe township memorial on Valley Street in front of the high school, a ceremony at approximately noon will include an address by U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle. The Vikings Band will play.
Oakdale
A parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Oakdale Fire Hall and continue to the Oakdale Honor Roll. Parade participants will be Oakdale Area Veterans, American Legion Post 82 of Carnegie, the West Allegheny High School Band, Oakdale Fire Department and others.
State Sen. John Pippy, R-Moon, will be the guest speaker at the ceremony that begins at 10:30 a.m.
Scott
A parade starts at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Victory Church, 1000 Lindsay Road. It continues to the township park, where a ceremony will be held, sponsored by American Legion Post 290.
