Woman sentenced in fetal kidnapping case
Tuesday, May 22, 2007

KITTANNING, Pa. -- An Armstrong County woman who admitted to kidnapping her pregnant neighbor and trying to cut the unborn child from her womb was sentenced to 22 to 50 years today.

Armstrong County Judge Kenneth G. Valasek sentenced Peggy Jo Conner, 40, after the victim, Valerie Oskin, testified.

In February, Ms. Conner pleaded guilty to kidnapping and attempted homicide of Ms. Oskin and aggravated assaults of the expectant mother and her unborn child. Ms. Conner is represented by attorney David DeFazio.

During the months leading to the October 2005 attack, Ms. Conner had told her boyfriend and several others that she was expecting a child and had shown them a sonogram of a baby boy.

The prosecutor said Ms. Conner entered Ms. Oskin's home and bashed her head with a wooden baseball bat. Hours later, witnesses saw Ms. Oskin emerge, dazed and bleeding, from her mobile home and said Ms. Conner offered to drive her to a local hospital.

Instead, she drove her neighbor to an abandoned logging road and struck her head with a crowbar. She performed a crude Caesarean section. A teenager discovered the scene on the logging road and told his father, who alerted police.
