Port Authority Web site has details of transit cuts
Riders, anxious to know whether their bus trips would be eliminated, can finally get the good, or bad, news
Tuesday, May 22, 2007

The waiting is over for Port Authority riders seeking information about extensive changes to bus and trolley routes effective June 17 -- but only if they have access to a computer.

The authority made the changes available yesterday on its Web site, www.portauthority.org, covering alternate service for 29 bus routes to be eliminated and modifications to 107 other routes.

Because of the large number of changes, printed timetables will not be available until the first week of June. They'll be distinguishable by the black-and-white covers, as opposed to blue covers used for five years.

New timetables will be mailed to people who request them via a telephone hot line, 412-566-5335. Callers should provide a full name, address and ZIP code as well as identify the route so that the appropriate schedule can be mailed as soon as it is available.

To find route information on the Web, riders have been instructed to click on the banner titled "Things Are Changing." Then select "Schedules" and chose the appropriate timetable, viewed as a .pdf file.

Service is being cut or modified as part of the most far-reaching cutbacks in Port Authority history, aimed at reducing the transit agency's costs by $35 million. Last week, authority officials said they still face a $50 million deficit for the 2007-08 fiscal year that begins July 1, even after a planned January fare increase.

Kahri Mosley, state director of the Pennsylvania League of Young Voters, submitted a petition last month asking that the new transit schedules be made available as quickly as possible.

"No one has seen the schedules and people are scared," he said. "They want to know how they will get to work, school or doctor's appointments."

Seventy-seven of the 89 timetables that the authority publishes are being revised and maps are being redrawn as a result of the service reductions. The timetables reflect a total of 45,717 trolley and bus trips that drivers will make each week starting at 12:01 a.m. June 17, when the changes officially go into effect.
