"Spider-Man 3" was just the first of the summer's marquee movies, the ones aimed at mainstream audiences who want to escape the heat and bask in laughs, adventure and thrills. Here are some of the highlights of the commercial releases due before Labor Day, with "Shrek the Third" and "Away From Her" arriving this weekend. Dates subject to change.
MAY 25
"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" -- The addition of Chow Yun-Fat to the cast could make this an even bigger international hit. He plays a cunning Chinese pirate named Sao Feng in this third installment that also will introduce Keith Richards as Teague Sparrow.
"Waitress" -- Keri Russell is a diner waitress with a knack for naming her delicious desserts after the tumultuous events of her life, as with "Kick in the Pants" pie or "I Don't Want Earl's Baby" pie.
"Bug" -- Psychological thriller directed by William Friedkin, starring Ashley Judd as a lonely fearful waitress and based on the Tracy Letts off-Broadway play of the same name.
JUNE 1
"Knocked Up" -- Katherine Heigl from "Grey's Anatomy" is an up-and coming entertainment journalist who has a drunken one-night stand with a slacker (Seth Rogen) and ends up pregnant in this comedy from "40-Year-Old Virgin" director Judd Apatow.
"Mr. Brooks" -- Psychological thriller with Kevin Costner as a respected businessman, husband and father who has a secret life as a serial killer. William Hurt plays his wicked alter ego, and Demi Moore is a tenacious detective.
JUNE 8
"Ocean's Thirteen" -- The gang goes after its riskiest and most ambitious casino heist yet. In addition to the usual suspects, Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin turn up.
"Surf's Up" -- Has penguin fever spiked? This animated comedy may tell, as Shia LaBeouf speaks for a teenage penguin and up-and-coming surfer who enters his first pro competition.
"Hostel: Part II" -- Horror sequel, with Heather Matarazzo, Lauren German and Bijou Phillips.
JUNE 15
"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" -- The Silver Surfer comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction in this sequel to "Fantastic Four."
"Nancy Drew" -- Move over, Pamela Sue Martin and lots of other actresses who have played the girl sleuth. Emma Roberts is the resourceful detective who leaves her hometown and enrolls at Hollywood High.
JUNE 22
"Evan Almighty" -- Steve Carell, who played preening newscaster Evan Baxter in "Bruce Almighty," is back, but this time, he's a newly elected congressman commanded by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark.
"A Mighty Heart" -- Mariane Pearl's memoir, "A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl," served as the inspiration for the story of the murdered Wall Street Journal reporter and his pregnant wife. Angelina Jolie and Dan Futterman star.
"1408" -- John Cusack is a horror novelist who checks into suite 1408 of the notorious Dolphin Hotel for his "Ten Nights in Haunted Hotel Rooms" project, based on a Stephen King short story.
"Captivity"-- Elisha Cuthbert is a fashion model and cover girl who is drugged, kidnapped, held captive and tortured in this movie that bills itself as a combination of "Saw" and "Hostel."
JUNE 27
"Live Free or Die Hard" -- In the fourth installment of the "Die Hard" action franchise and the first in a dozen years, Bruce Willis is back as New York cop John McClane, and this time he's teaming up with a computer expert, played by Justin Long.
JUNE 29
"Ratatouille" -- Brad Bird ("The Incredibles") directs this animated adventure about a rat named Remy who dreams of becoming a great chef.
"Sicko" -- Michael Moore takes aim at America's healthcare system in this documentary that may have some providers and drug companies reaching for the Excedrin.
"Evening" -- Claire Danes, Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep and Toni Collette star in this adaptation of Susan Minot's novel about a dying woman who recalls a long-ago brush with passion.
JULY 4
"Transformers" -- The Hasbro action figures have inspired a movie about aliens turning Earth into a battleground. Shia LaBeouf leads the cast.
"License to Wed" -- Mandy Moore and John Krasinski, Jim Halpert on "The Office," play a newly engaged couple who try to pass a marriage prep course conducted by Rev. Frank (Robin Williams).
JULY 13
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" -- Harry returns for his fifth year at Hogwarts, and "Vera Drake" star Imelda Staunton joins the franchise as villainess Dolores Umbridge, a new teacher bent on restricting free thought.
JULY 20
"Hairspray" -- John Travolta dances again, but he looks nothing like his white-suited disco king from "Saturday Night Fever." He plays Edna Turnblad in this movie based on the original John Waters film, which morphed into a stage musical and now returns to the screen.
"I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" -- When two firefighters, played by Adam Sandler and Kevin James, pretend to be domestic partners for life insurance purposes, they become front-page news and must feign domestic bliss.
JULY 27
"The Simpsons Movie" -- The Sunday night mainstay comes to the big screen 18 years after breaking away from Tracey Ullman's show and going out on its own.
"No Reservations" -- American take on the 2001 German film "Mostly Martha." Catherine Zeta-Jones plays a master chef who runs an upscale restaurant in New York and struggles to connect with her 9-year-old niece (Abigail Breslin) as she's dealing with a brash new chef (Aaron Eckhart) on her staff.
"Who's Your Caddy" -- Big Boi and Jeffrey Jones star in this comedy about a rap mogul who runs into opposition when he tries to join a conservative country club in the South.
AUG. 3
"Bratz" -- The chic fashion dolls have inspired a live-action feature starring Nathalia Ramos, Janel Parrish, Logan Browning and Skyler Shaye as BFF (best friends forever) who find their bonds tested as they enter Carry Nation High.
"The Bourne Ultimatum" -- Matt Damon, Julia Stiles and Joan Allen return for another chapter of the espionage series, and David Strathairn, Paddy Considine and Edgar Ramirez join the cast as cops, federal officers and Interpol agents who keep Jason Bourne in their sights.
"Hot Rod" -- The path from "Saturday Night Live" to the big screen continues with Andy Samberg as a self-proclaimed stuntman who plans to jump over 15 buses so he can raise money for his abusive stepfather to have a life-saving operation. Before you say "Aaaw," it's so he can fight the older man once he's well.
"Underdog" -- Jason Lee speaks for Underdog in this movie mix of special effects and live action inspired by the TV cartoon series.
"Resurrecting the Champ" -- An up-and-coming sports reporter rescues a homeless man, only to discover he's a boxing legend who was believed to be dead. Josh Hartnett and Samuel L. Jackson star.
AUG. 10
"Becoming Jane" -- The few known facts surrounding Jane Austen's real-life flirtation with an Irish lawyer have been spun into a romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy and Maggie Smith.
"Rush Hour 3" -- Six years after "Rush Hour 2," Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan are back as mismatched cops. This time, they must travel to Paris to battle a wing of the Chinese organized crime family, the Triads.
"Stardust" -- Fantasy epic about a young man who tries to win a woman's heart by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star. With Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, Sienna Miller, Peter O'Toole, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro, among others.
"Daddy Day Camp" -- Sequel to "Daddy Day Care," with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Paul Rae as ill-equipped fathers running a summer day camp.
AUG. 17
"Invasion" -- New take on "The Body Snatchers," starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig.
"Wedding Daze" -- Romantic comedy starring Jason Biggs as a young man who has given up on love. On a friend's dare, though, he proposes to the first girl he sees -- a waitress (Isla Fisher).
"Superbad" -- Two socially inept teens, played by Michael Cera and Jonah Hill, try to reverse their lifelong losing streak with the ladies in one panic-driven night.
AUG. 24
"Good Luck Chuck" -- Dane Cook is a successful dentist with a reputation as a "good-luck charm" for women who sleep with him and find true love with their next man. He wants to break that cycle when he falls for a penguin specialist (Jessica Alba) in this romantic comedy.
"Mr. Bean's Holiday" -- Rowan Atkinson is back as Mr. Bean and, during his holiday at the French Riviera, he is wrongly thought to be a kidnapper and acclaimed filmmaker.
"Illegal Tender" -- After the gangsters who murdered his father come to settle a score, a Latino teen and his mother turn the tables on the killers.
AUG. 31
"The Brothers Solomon" -- Will Arnett and Will Forte play good-hearted but romantically challenged brothers who find out their dying father's last wish is for a grandchild.
"Balls of Fury" -- Comic caper set against the backdrop of competitive ping-pong. Wackiness quotient further upped by the presence of Christopher Walken.
"Halloween" -- Rob Zombie provides a new take on Michael Myers and promises not to deliver a copycat of the previous flicks in the fright franchise.
