The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette won 12 Golden Quill Awards last night at the Pittsburgh Hilton, including two best-of-show awards for print journalism.
The awards, sponsored by The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, recognize excellence in written, photographic and broadcast journalism in Western Pennsylvania.
Post-Gazette Business reporter Dan Fitzpatrick won the Ray Sprigle Memorial Award for his series "Wild, Wild East," on the Pittsburgh area's business ties with China, in the daily newspapers and wire services circulation over 45,000 category. Patti Conley of the Beaver County Times won the Sprigle award for the under 45,000 category for "Stigma & Secrets." Charlie Deitch of Pittsburgh City Paper won the Sprigle Award for "Gambling Coverage" in the non-daily newspapers and magazines category.
Photographer Annie O'Neill of the Post-Gazette won the Ed Romano Memorial Award: photography/videography, for her photos accompanying the series "Coal Disaster - Mexico."
Reporter Bob Mayo, WTAE-TV, won television's best-of-show award, the Ed King Memorial Award, for "Passing of Power." Radio's Ed King Memorial Award went to Kevin Gavin, Alexandria Chaklos, Mark Nootbaar, Katherine Fink, Betsy Zamagias and Jeff Cech, WDUQ-FM, for "Death of a Mayor."
The Press Club also honored Madelyn A. Ross, associate vice chancellor for national media relations, University of Pittsburgh, and the former managing editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Pittsburgh Press, with the President's Award for lifetime achievement. Mr. Mayo, of WTAE, also won the Service to Journalism Award for contributions to the field of journalism. Jennifer Paul of Irwin, a student at Boston University, received the group's inaugural scholarship, given to an aspiring journalism student.
