Pittsburghers finally can get Josh Gibson's name on their backs -- and their sneakers.
This week, two East Liberty retailers received Nike Dunk High Premium UTT LE, a new shoe bearing the name of the Negro Leagues' most famous power hitter. One store, Ace Athletic, 6021 Penn Ave., received nearly 40 pairs of the $90 shoes and 15 matching jerseys ($75), with Mr. Gibson's name and number 20 on the back.
The shoes and baseball jerseys also carry the name "Veracruz," representing the Veracruz Azules (Blues), the Mexican League team that Mr. Gibson played for in the 1940s, during the Homestead Grays' offseason. The shoes and jerseys are part of what Nike calls its Latin Legacy collection, an offshoot of the larger Untold Truth collection it created in conjunction with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Gibson also played for the Pittsburgh Crawfords and grew up on the North Side.
After the Post-Gazette reported last week that the Gibson/Veracruz shoes weren't available in the hall-of-famer's hometown, Nike rushed the black, blue and red sneakers to Ace and David's Shoes, 6017 Penn Ave., which received six pairs.
Store manager Brandon Quarles said he didn't order any initially because he didn't know of Mr. Gibson's links to the Mexican team. He did order another Veracruz shoe from Nike's Latin Legacy/Untold Truth collection, the Air Max 90 UTT LE ($90). Those sneakers do not have Mr. Gibson's name on them but have been a bigger hit with style-savvy wearers.
This week, the Footaction store in Century III Mall received a dozen Veracruz Air Maxes, which are white with red and green accents. The other three area Footaction stores have not received any of the shoes. Footaction is the exclusive national retailer for the Gibson/Veracruz line.
